More than 300 volunteers, vendors and employees were at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Monday preparing for the opening of the fair today at noon. Some were unloading livestock, some were preparing their booths and others were setting up exhibits for the week ahead.

Finally, the answer to the age-old question: What does one do with an 800-pound squash? Kristine Albrecht, of Santa Cruz, has one suggestion: flaunt it.

For the last five years, either she or her son - or both - have won at the Santa Cruz County Fair for their massive pumpkins, which they have been growing for the last several years.

Pajaro Valley High School basketball players know a little something about team effort, and they proved it off the court. In September, the boys and girls teams took on maintenance duties at the annual Santa Cruz County Fair to raise money for uniforms, coaching stipends and tournament expenses.
