Some say racing cars is in their blood, like it's genetic. It may seem crazy, but if you get to know the drivers out at Ocean Speedway, it really does seem to be part of their DNA. Most of the drivers waiting for the start of Saturday's races at the Santa Cruz County Fair seem to have been passed the trait from a family member.

"There is no other place where you have all these delicious, greasy, fried foods all lined up for you to sink your teeth in. You can clog up every vein or artery that courses through your body."

The sound of metal striking metal rang out again and again as Jack Waldman, wearing a determined look on his face, pounded a red-hot old horseshoe on an antique anvil. Meanwhile, Taylor Ramer, grinning widely, was turning the crank on a blower, stoking a fire in a portable forge.

It may be a Western tradition, but horse shows are a dying breed. Thats why fans of equestrian events feel so fortunate to have the Santa Cruz County Fair. Every year it is sort of a Super Bowl for the local clubs, or at least the U.S. Open.
